  • Dr. Brown's notes:
    • "the only truth in life is that there is no truth"
      • if that's the only truth there is, then there is a truth
    • his whole life is wrapped around manipulating facts to get belief
      • lawyers must convine 12 people, judge, and prosecutors of their side (people)
      • he looks at it as power games and fear
    • Dr. Brown has been on 2 juries
    • the feeling of fear that he described in film (having government throw it's full force of prosecution system against him)
      • doesn't say if he was guilty or not
    • justice just amounts to victory in a trial
      • system pits people against people
      • not an ideal system of justice
    • "there is no absolute justice"
      • people do not come to him for justice
      • does not give advice about justice system
    • he can't draw the distinction between good and bad anymore
    • Other peoples' lives may depend on your decisions
      • lawyer looks at life as struggle and fear rules
      • documentary from last year: pilot took seriously how his decision affected other lives as an obligation to other people
    • Jury duty:
      • people who don't want to be there end up populating jury box
      • anyone can serve on a jury - very few restrictions

    • Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" vs. "Chicago" Lawyer
    • Lawyer didn't aspire to any more than theatrics to win a trial
    • more like "Chicago" Lawyer
  • Can you draw the line between good and bad?
    • How much life do you have to face to where you can't draw that line anymore
    • If you can't draw the line between good and bad, where are you going to be once you reach his stage of life?
      • if you can't, you're not going to be pilot, you're going to be lawyer (see below)
    • Some people have really sharp distinctions, but they are warped
  • It's a good idea to face head on situations where this power game is in play
    • lives are at stake
    • when involved in a court case, other people making decisions around you don't make good decisions
  • This is a point in life where your values are getting shaped
  • Would you want him as your lawyer?
    • perform the act without concern for client
  • Is this the way the court system ought to be?
  • How can we change the system?
    • One way the system won't be changed: accepting it.
    • this lawyer isn't doing anything to change the system
    • basic intelligence test for people on the jury?
    • always new generations coming through jury duty
    • many people are jaded like lawyer in interview

    • parents? peers?
    • when looking for perfection, you will always be disappointed
    • look into ourselves - introspection
    • be the example for others
      • in order to do this, you must look to yourself
