  • What will happen to Cheri?
  • Is there anything we can do to change your mind?
  • People decided on Cal Poly because of our Honors Program.
  • Will there still be the same amount of Honors classes offered?
  • How will this decision to affect current Honors Students?
  • Benefits:
    • Leadership experience?
    • Networking
    • More involved in Cal Poly
  • Do you think the value of Cal Poly will decrease without an Honors program? How will we compete with other schools that do have Honors programs?
  • In light of recent rumors circulating the potential elimination of the Cal Poly Honors Program, I would like to share some of my experience with the program, as a graduating senior with honors credit. The program has given me the incentive and the motivation to achieve academic excellence and expose me to a more in-depth classroom experience.

I graduated from high school with honors and the primary motivation behind achieving that status was to gain admission to a prominent university like Cal Poly. With an MBA in my future career, it was important that I worked towards the goal of graduating with a high GPA at university to go to a good graduate school. The "Graduating with Honors" status, attainable only through satisfying the requirements of the Cal Poly Honors Program, became a huge motivation tool to study and get good grades. It was an exclusive club...I wanted to be known as a honors student and the Honors Program provided the credibility to uphold that status.

But the Honors Program wasn't limited to just achieving high marks in classes. Indeed, the learning dynamic in honor-specific classes was a large part of what made maintaining honors status a priority. First, these classes were made up of other honors students...the ones who significantly cared about their education and making the most of it. No longer was a class discussion dominated by the professor and the three students who cared to share their thoughts. Instead, nearly everyone in the honors course had relevant and insightful comments to make about the discussion. The professors knew this too. I saw a difference in the teaching quality and enjoyment of honors professors versus non-honors professors. It was almost like an exclusive club within the faculty to have the chance to teach an honors course. This was evident through the enthusiasm the professor displayed while teaching material...after taking so many classes, most students can tell when a professor is enjoying teaching or not. The Honors Program is a win-win for both students and professors alike.

Without the Honors Program, Cal Poly will be turning its back on a fundamental mission of universities - to support students in achieving academic excellence. Long live the Honors Program.
